Up until now, straightforward Share Fishermen did not receive the seafarer allowance. They were specifically excluded.

However now, as long as they are:

  • At least 80 days at sea
  • They intend to be fishing
  • The vessel they are using is registered in the EU and is licensed to fish.

Then for the first time they receive this tax discount. This also applies to part time fishermen. However it only applies to Sea Fishermen not lake or river fishermen or people working in the fish farm industry.

The fishermen are owed a few breaks. If you look at www.marinetraffic.com you can see all the foreign trawlers working away off the Irish coast. There is no easy living!
